Many treatment plants were built more than a century ago and these aging systems, which combine wastewater and stormwater, can’t keep up with the rapid growth in cities and suburbia across the nation. These buried pipes tend to leak and get clogged with debris and they can’t handle the growing population or the stormwater runoff that once was absorbed by natural green spaces that have been paved over.
