PROJECTS:
Watershed Improvements
Penn State Behrend Erosion and Sediment Control Project
This project involves the completion of design and construction of Best Management Practices to substantially reduce erosion caused by failed stormwater control structures on campus. Sea Grant prepared a grant on behalf of The Pennsylvania State University for funds to prepare the design of a project to address this problem. On May 27, 2005, a grant in the amount of $43,350 was awarded by the Great Lakes Commission for this purpose. Urban Engineers Erie, Inc. was hired and has finalized this design which will substantially reduce erosion and sedimentation into Trout Run, a tributary of Fourmile Creek which runs through campus. Also completed is the identification of additional green infrastructure improvements that may be implemented on campus in the future.
With design completed, PA Sea Grant has authored two more applications which, if funded, will be used to construct these BMPs to implement the design recommendations. The projected construction cost for this project is $257,000. An application requesting $75,000 was submitted to the Great Lakes Commission and was awarded in mid-2006. PASG has submitted two other applications on behalf of PSU-Behrend for funds totaling $100,000 which are pending. PSU will be providing the remaining matching funds for this project. If the grants are approved, construction is expected to occur in late summer/early fall of 2007.
