Urbanization of the Lake Erie watershed has resulted in reduced population densities in older built up areas, and sprawling intrusions into former natural areas.  Conservation of environmentally significant properties protects wildlife habitat, fights sprawl, maintains water quality and aesthetics and, in most cases provides public recreational access for fishing, hunting, bird watching, etc.
