Pennsylvania Sea Grant is partnering with The Nature Conservancy to apply the Active River Area Model to prioritize land protection efforts in the Pennsylvania Lake Erie watershed The model maps areas within a watershed that are essential to key natural processes, including floodplains, riparian buffers and wetlands, and headwaters and steep-sloped areas that are important sources of organic material, nutrients, and habitat-forming sediment to the river system. The model will be refined to create sub-watershed scale output that will determine those areas that are in the best condition and contribute most to the functioning of rivers, and thus, the best candidates for protection.
