A new infestation of zebra mussels has been discovered at Lake Took-A-While, a 24 acre recreational lake associated with Talen Energy's nuclear power plant near Berwick, PA.
As part of the Pennsylvania Zebra and Quagga Mussel Monitoring Network, Dr. Brian Mangan of King's College discovered the zebra mussels while performing an inspection on the spill structure at the lake in May. He found that every hard surface in the lake, including the eastern shoreline which is covered with rip-rap, is covered with the mussels. The lake is stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and is heavily fished. It drains to a remnant of the North Branch Canal, which flows slowly south for about 1,600 meters before entering the Susquehanna River.
