The 2026 Sea Grant Shipboard Science Immersion on Lake Superior departed from Duluth, Minnesota on July 8 with 15 educators from across the Great Lakes, including Erin Hricik, Environmental Science and AP Environmental Science educator (grades 11 & 12), at the Sharon City School District in Sharon, PA. Together, with Sea Grant educators and scientists studying the Great Lakes, the group is exploring;
- how zooplankton communities change from nearshore to offshore and from day to night
- how zooplankton community composition affects larval fish diet selection,
- and how water color and incoming light affect water chemistry and photosynthesis.
Mandi Young, from the Great Lakes Educators of Aquatic and Marine Science (GLEAMS) will walk participants through the investigations taking place during the week aboard the Lake Guardian R/V.
This year’s Shipboard Science Immersion is hosted by Minnesota Sea Grant, Wisconsin Sea Grant, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, and the Sea Grant Center for Great Lakes Literacy, with support from Lake Champlain Sea Grant, Michigan Sea Grant, New York Sea Grant, Ohio Sea Grant, Pennsylvania Sea Grant, the National Sea Grant College Program and NOAA through a partnership among NOAA, the EPA Great Lakes National Program Office and funding from the EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
