Storm Drain Marking Events Planned in Delaware County, PA
Marking storm drains to promote clean water in local watersheds and Delaware River
(PHILADELPHIA, PA) — Pennsylvania Sea Grant and partners are hosting two activities in Delaware County to promote clean water and healthy communities, and to reduce pollution in the Naamans, Marcus Hook, Stoney Creek watersheds, which all drain into the Delaware River.
Pennsylvania Sea Grant, Bethel Township, Trainer Borough, Delaware County Conservation District, Clean Air Council, and Naamans Marcus Hook Stoney Creek Watershed Alliance are teaming up to educate communities about storm water and the associated water quality impacts by hosting two educational and activity-based events.
Heavy rain events, referred to as storm water, carry pollutants, debris, and trash along roadways or other hard surfaces until reaching storm drains, which lead to local streams and rivers. Proper maintenance activities, such as clearing debris and trash from the storm drain, and never dumping anything into them, can help maintain water quality of local waterways.
Participants will learn about the impacts of pollution entering storm drains, storm water, and local stream health, including common sources of pollution. Following the instruction, participants will label storm drains to help increase community awareness.
“It is important for residents to know about their local waterways and how storm drains are connected to them,” said Zach Nemec, Coastal Outreach Specialist for Pennsylvania Sea Grant. “These workshops are just a step in the right direction for folks to learn about their local creeks and become stewards.”
These events follow-up on the first storm drain marking event which was held on April 16 in Upper Chichester Township. Thirteen volunteers participated, marking 14 storm drains around the Upper Chichester municipal building.
“The NMS Watershed Alliance is thrilled to support this series of storm drain marking workshops in the Naamans, Marcus Hook, and Stony Creek watersheds,” said Eve Miari, Director of Programs for the Clean Air Council. “NMS is the last remaining unprotected sub-watershed area in Delaware County. The newly formed NMS Watershed Alliance is excited to support and participate in this important project to raise awareness about where our stormwater flows, and how we can better protect these three streams, and the Delaware River.”
